Public Works Environmental Storm Water Division is responsible for Norfolk’s street sweeping program. Reportedly, the crews do their best to reach every neighborhood street each month, but occasionally roadways are missed due to circumstances beyond their control. Below is a list of possible reasons a roadway or neighborhood might not get swept.
1.Weather- Rain or freezing temperatures: Sweepers are not effective in collecting debris during rain events; therefore, sweeping will be suspended once the rain gets too heavy. The same is true for freezing temperatures. Sweepers use water to pick up fine particulates from the curb lines during colder weather this water can freeze damaging the equipment and creating hazards for residents.
2.Leaf Season: During the fall sweeping crews work overtime to clear the excessive leaves that collect in the gutters, but sometimes there are not enough daylight hours to reach every street. Sweepers are also cautioned not to attempt to sweep large piles of leaves due to potential damage to the sweepers. Rocks and large limbs often hide under these piles and damage the equipment.
3.Parked Cars: Our sweepers can not sweep if cars are parked along the roadways. Residents are reminded to move there cars once a month to allow the sweepers easy access.
The Storm Water Division has Monday built into our weekly schedule to make up any missed neighborhoods and streets. Make up streets and neighborhoods change based on the issues listed above and impossible to predict. Park cars and enforces areas are especially problematic on Monday sweeping days, but the sweepers will do the best job possible.
Keeping Norfolk’s streets clean and free of pollutants is a team approach. The City encourages all residents to clean and maintain their verge and curb line as stated in the city code. This city code requirement was enacted to ensure that city streets and sidewalks are safe and preserved.
