Two young white men are driving a white van with windows all around it(LIC#.35 ID 284 VA). They will tell you that they are in a contest to win a cruise by selling magazines for the Troops. If you pay them in cash they will get extra points. They say that the magazines are shipped straight to the Troops so there is not way to confirm that this is true--IT IS A SCAM. Last seen in the neigborhood on Thursday, March 8, 2012 being dropped off by the white van. They have been going through the Freemason District. It has been reported that one of the men attempted to get access to inside the condos by knocking on interior doors and telling others he was there to visit. He had provided a name and unit number that did not exist and was not let in. He says his name is Nick Woodman from Colorado and the other is Jacob from California. The Police stated that this magazine business recruits these guys, pay for their meals and lodging but if they do not sell then they are let go with nowhere to go. Please pass this information along to all of your family, friends and neighbors.

Public Works Environmental Storm Water Division
Public Works Environmental Storm Water Division is responsible for Norfolk’s street sweeping program. Reportedly, the crews do their best to reach every neighborhood street each month, but occasionally roadways are missed due to circumstances beyond their control. Below is a list of possible reasons a roadway or neighborhood might not get swept.

1.Weather- Rain or freezing temperatures: Sweepers are not effective in collecting debris during rain events; therefore, sweeping will be suspended once the rain gets too heavy. The same is true for freezing temperatures. Sweepers use water to pick up fine particulates from the curb lines during colder weather this water can freeze damaging the equipment and creating hazards for residents.

2.Leaf Season: During the fall sweeping crews work overtime to clear the excessive leaves that collect in the gutters, but sometimes there are not enough daylight hours to reach every street. Sweepers are also cautioned not to attempt to sweep large piles of leaves due to potential damage to the sweepers. Rocks and large limbs often hide under these piles and damage the equipment.

3.Parked Cars: Our sweepers can not sweep if cars are parked along the roadways. Residents are reminded to move there cars once a month to allow the sweepers easy access.

The Storm Water Division has Monday built into our weekly schedule to make up any missed neighborhoods and streets. Make up streets and neighborhoods change based on the issues listed above and impossible to predict. Park cars and enforces areas are especially problematic on Monday sweeping days, but the sweepers will do the best job possible.

Keeping Norfolk’s streets clean and free of pollutants is a team approach. The City encourages all residents to clean and maintain their verge and curb line as stated in the city code. This city code requirement was enacted to ensure that city streets and sidewalks are safe and preserved.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding street sweeping, storm water or Public Works, please feel free to contact F. Jackson, Monday-Friday from 7:00 am- 3:30 pm at 757-823-4007 or via e-mail at fleta.jackson@norfolk.gov.
